Skin elasticity comes from the dermis, the collagen-rich layer beneath the visible surface of skin, and not from anything happening on top of it.
We tend to think of skin the way we see it: as a surface. A color, a texture, a canvas for makeup or serum. But the skin’s actual structural work, the part that determines whether it looks and feels youthful, happens in a layer most of us never think about directly: the dermis.
What the Dermis Is And Where Dermis Collagen Lives
The dermis sits just beneath the epidermis, which is the thin, visible outer layer of skin. It’s a much thicker, denser layer made up mostly of collagen, roughly 70 to 80% type I and type III collagen by dry weight, along with elastin and a network of proteins that hold water in place.¹ This layer is built and maintained by cells called fibroblasts, which continuously produce new structural collagen and break down old, damaged collagen as part of the skin’s normal renewal process.
Everything we associate with youthful skin, firmness, bounce, resistance to sagging, originates in this layer. The epidermis on top is more like a protective wrapper. The dermis is the actual structure.
Why Skin Elasticity Is a Dermis Story, Not a Surface Story
Skin elasticity, the ability to stretch and then return to its original shape, depends on the density and organization of collagen and elastin fibers within the dermis.² When this collagen network is dense and well organized, skin snaps back quickly after being stretched or compressed. When collagen thins and becomes disorganized, that same skin takes longer to recover, or doesn’t fully recover at all.
This is why so many products marketed for “elasticity” applied directly to the surface have limited impact. Topical products mostly act on the epidermis and, at best, reach the very upper portion of the dermis in small amounts. They aren’t reaching, or meaningfully changing, the deeper collagen structure that elasticity actually depends on. What Causes Skin Aging And What Changes in the Dermis Over Time
As we move through our 30s, 40s, and beyond, dermal collagen naturally begins to decline, and that decline accelerates sharply around menopause. Research tracking skin collagen directly has found losses of close to 30% in the first five years after menopause, with continued yearly losses after that.³ This isn’t just a cosmetic shift. It reflects a real, measurable thinning of the tissue layer responsible for skin’s structural integrity.
The Connection Between Estrogen and Skin Elasticity
This decline is driven largely by estrogen, which acts directly on the fibroblasts living in the dermis. Estrogen receptors sit on these cells, and estrogen signals them to keep producing collagen while suppressing the enzymes that break it down.⁴ When estrogen declines, that signal weakens, and the dermis loses ground on both sides of the equation at once. It’s worth noting that dermal collagen can actually be measured, not just estimated. Tools like ultrasound and a suction device called a cutometer can assess dermal thickness and elasticity directly, which is how researchers track changes in clinical trials rather than relying on visual impressions alone. This same kind of measurement is what allows us to say with real confidence that a given intervention improved elasticity by a specific percentage instead of simply “seeming to help.”
