Scan the collagen aisle at a supermarket or health food store and almost every product uses the same handful of words: hydrolyzed, peptides, type I, type III. These words sound scientific, and they are, technically, accurate. But they don’t tell you whether what’s in the jar has actually been shown to do anything once it’s in your body. That’s the real dividing line, and it’s worth understanding both halves of it: the type of collagen, and whether it’s bioactive.

First, What Type I and Type III Collagen Are and What That Means

Most collagen supplements are built from type I and type III collagen, and understanding the difference between them helps explain what a given product is actually meant to do. Type I collagen is the most abundant structural collagen in the body, making up the majority of the protein found in skin, bone, and tendons, and it’s responsible for tensile strength, the structural quality that keeps tissue from tearing under stress.¹ Type III collagen is thinner and more flexible, working alongside type I in skin, blood vessels, and other soft, elastic tissue, and it’s especially concentrated in younger, more metabolically active tissue.²

These two types typically appear together in supplements because they occur together naturally in skin, and research has found that the ratio between them shifts with age, with type III declining somewhat faster than type I over time.³ This is part of why most skin-focused collagen products list both types rather than isolating just one.

What Makes Collagen “Generic”

Generic collagen refers to a product that has been hydrolyzed, broken down through enzymatic processing into smaller peptide fragments, but without any confirmation that those specific fragments survive digestion, reach the bloodstream, or do anything measurable once they get there. It may accurately list “type I and type III collagen” on the label, and still have never been tested as a finished product in a clinical trial. The type is real. The activity is unconfirmed.

What Makes Collagen “Bioactive”

Bioactive collagen refers to a specific, patented peptide formulation that has been tested against a real, three-part standard: survival through digestion, absorption into the bloodstream, and a confirmed cellular response, typically increased fibroblast activity and new collagen production.⁴ This is a meaningfully higher bar, and it’s the reason bioactive peptides can point to specific, published clinical results, while generic collagen mostly relies on the general reputation of “collagen” as an ingredient category.

None of this means generic collagen is useless. It’s still a protein, and it still provides amino acids the body can use. But “useful as a protein source” and “shown to measurably improve skin elasticity or bone density in a clinical trial” are two very different claims, and most collagen marketing blurs the line between them. Knowing whether a product is bioactive, not just knowing its collagen type, is the more useful question to ask before buying.
